Hyundai teases a hydrogen SUV concept

The Hyundai Initium is a fuel cell vehicle that comes as a preview of an actual production car coming soon to replace the outdated Nexo.

It premieres the company’s new design language called Art of Steel. A boxy front end with rectangular headlight units, distinct c-pillars and lots of “rugged” trim bits all around seem to be its defining features. Aside from a body kit, the crossover wears an expedition rack. The interior appears large enough for family use.

The only electric motor on board outputs 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) to the wheels and has a minimum range of 650 kilometers, or 404 miles. For comparison’s sake, the Nexo runs out of hydrogen in 612 kilometers (380 miles) and doesn’t output more than 162 PS (160 hp / 120 kW). Hyundai highlights that both the fuel cells and the battery have been considerably improved in terms of capacity and overall efficiency.

The SUV will celebrate its live premiere at the Los Angeles show in November. The first deliveries are expected in the first half of 2025.
